            The Nebraska City Public School district has adopted a new English/Language Arts series for grades 6-12 called, Into Literature published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company.

            The series incorporates reading, writing, listening and speaking. Each grade level’s text consists of six different units, and each unit focuses on an essential question.  For example, in sixth grade, a few of the unit titles and essential questions are as follow:

Finding Courage                      How do you find courage in the face of fear?

Through an Animal’s Eyes     What can you learn by seeing the world through an

                                                animal’s eyes?

Seventh grade units and essential questions include the following:

Taking Action                         What helps people rice up to face difficulties?

Reality Check                          What can blur the lines between what’s real and what’s not?

Eighth grade units and essential questions include these:

Gadgets and Glitches              Does technology improve or control our lives?

The Thrill of Horror                  Why do we sometimes like to feel frightened?


            As students progress through middle and high school, they will become very familiar with the layout, vocabulary and expectations because those elements remain consistent for all grades. Each level of the series contains fiction – both classic and contemporary, non-fiction and poetry, and within each unit are selections with a range of reading levels. Students are given selection choices at the end of each unit and are encouraged to seek out the full text of excerpts which pique their interest.

            The teachers are excited about the challenging material that is found in this series and the manner in which students are expected to actively engage in each selection by annotating and responding while reading.   Almost everything in the text is available online, and the teachers will make more use of that feature as the year unfolds. The ELA teachers will be learning along with the students and will be making adjustments as we all become more familiar and comfortable with the series.
